Dr Mallawaarachchi is a Clinical Geneticist and Nephrologist, and Staff Specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Dr Mallawaarachchi is also a Senior Research Scientist in the Division of Genomics and Epigenetics at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Her current research focuses on understanding the molecular basis of polycystic kidney disease and is supported by a Viertel Foundation Clinical Investigator Award and The PKD Foundation. She has particular expertise in genomic analysis and variant interpretation and developed with first validated whole-genome sequencing based genetic testing for polycystic kidney disease. She has a clinical and research interest in the genetics of inherited kidney disease. As a Clinical Geneticist, she works with Genetic Counsellors to provide personalised care for patients and families with inherited disease. She has established specialised Renal Genetics clinics across the Sydney Local Health District and is the NSW state lead of the KidGen collaborative, a collaborative that coordinates multidisciplinary renal genetics clinics across Australia. She is also enthusiastic about education and is the co-lead of Kidney School and a member of the ANZSN Education and Training Committee.

The aims of the Society are to promote and support the study of the kidney and urinary tract in health and disease, and to ensure the highest professional standards for the practice of nephrology in Australia and New Zealand.
