THE REDUCED GLUTATHIONE IS ASSOCIATED TO HEMOGLOBIN AND DURATION OF HEMODIALYSIS IN CHRONIC HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS AT JOHANNES HOSPITAL-KUPANG, EAST NUSA TENGGARA, INDONESIA

Aim:  To examine correlation between Reduced Glutathione (GSH) pre and post hemodialysis (HD) with Body Mass Index (BMI), Hemoglobin (Hb) and duration of hemodialysis in Chronic hemodialysis patients
Background:  Impaired renal Function and duration of dialysis treatment in CKD patients are associated with increased Oxidative stress. Consequently decreased antioxidants defence which leads to promote the malnutrition, inflammation, and atherosclerosis  (MIA syndrome) and also anemia. One of the extracellular antioxidants such as  GSH can prevent free radical reaction.
Method:  A cross sectional study with consecutive sampling method was done in HD unit of Johannes hospital Kupang. GSH levels were examinated using ELISA during pre and post hemodialysis.
Results: There were 31 subjects, consisted of   67,7% males and  32,3% female, aged  52,97± 9,09 years old; hemoglobin  9,35± 1,22 mg/dl ; duration of HD  27,61± 26,67 month; BMI  23,83±  3,93 Kg/m.  Using Spearman correlation analysis test there was only significant correlation between pre HD GSH levels and hemoglobin (r = -0,574; p = 0,001) and  using Pearson correlation analysis test there was only significant correlation between post HD GSH levels and duration of HD (r = -0,401; p = 0,025) . Pre HD GSH levels   1,8± 0,54 nmol/mL and  post HD GSH levels  1,73± 0,33 nmol/mL, however no significant difference ( p = 0,422 with Wilcoxon analysis test) was found.
Conclusion: Significant correlation  between pre HD GSH levels and hemoglobin,  between post HD GSH levels and duration of HD. Pre HD GSH levels was negatively correlated with hemoglobin levels. Post HD GSH levels was negatively correlated with duration of HD.
